Masterpiece immersive sim feeling like System Shock spiritual successor. Clever level design.
Our analysis
A deeply rewarding immersive sim and spiritual System Shock successor, with the best-in-class level design and emergent gameplay that gives nearly every room multiple solutions informed by powers, stealth, and approach. The shape-shifting Mimic enemies are a brilliant standout. It falters with overly familiar Art Deco styling, underwhelming non-Mimic enemies, and an end-game flood of high-HP foes that erodes the carefully built tension, leaving it polished but not quite groundbreaking.
Our analysis
Prey is excellent and a standout among AAA games, feeling like a throwback to 90s PC shooters with brilliant, responsive controls and full lean/jump movement. It runs and is optimized superbly, rewards thorough exploration, and the glue gun, deep perk system, and slick recycler/fabricator crafting add real depth and replayability. Tense, Alien-like atmosphere with mimics shines; minor gripes are bullet-spongey possessed humans and unwanted enemy sensor tags showing through walls.
Our analysis
ZP: effective action RPG with exploration; weak horror due to poor atmosphere.
Our analysis
Immersive sim blending Bioshock/Half-Life with strong level design and alien ability system; slow first hour.
Prey will clearly remain in my heart somewhere between food and loveAbout
