Our analysis

This enhanced Switch port is an outstanding shadow-drop release, running at a locked 60fps even in handheld and dropping to a stable 30 only in four-player local split screen. It packs in an enormous options suite (texture smoothing, dynamic lighting, FOV, anti-aliasing toggles), excellent gyro aiming, online and co-op cross-platform play, and a generous bundle of expansion packs including the new Dimension of the Machine. Cheap, nostalgic, and built around the tight shooting and well-designed maps that earned the original its reputation.

Our analysis

An outstanding, feature-rich remaster that wisely preserves the classic's look and feel while layering in optional modern touches like dynamic lighting and resolution options. The secret-strewn, atmospheric Lovecraftian level design holds up remarkably well, combat is buttery smooth, and it packs the full campaign, all expansions, a glorious new Machine Games episode, robust online and co-op, and cross-play. Excellent gyro controls and portability arguably make this the definitive version.
