A masterpiece of level design that remixes Mario's entire history into one cohesive game. Fixed cameras work perfectly, every level is distinct with fresh ideas, the powerups and mechanics are creative, and it achieves an incredible idea-to-hour ratio that far exceeds most AAA games.

Our analysis

A polished, undeniably fun Wii U platformer with pleasant, vibrant visuals, great character animation, and a huge variety of powerups, plus chaotic four-player co-op that is a riot with friends. It is held back by limited, somewhat dated controls catering to Wii remotes, the troublesome grab button causing unfair co-op deaths, and a difficulty curve that stays very easy until the brutal final and Special World levels. Simpler than past 3D Marios, but on its own merits it is a genuinely enjoyable, high-polish experience.

ZP finds a competently designed platformer with retro charm but uninspired execution. Cat suit mechanic forces limited level design. Co-op is competitive rather than cooperative. User comment integration detracts from experience.
