Before You Buy: one step forward but not enough; roster cuts disappointing; gym and world exploration improved.

Our analysis
Pokémon Sword is a very good game that successfully introduces the Wild Area as a first step toward true open-world design, but falls short of delivering a fully realized open-world experience due to continued restrictive level design and the franchise's inability to balance competing demands for new Pokémon, mechanics, and stories within tight release schedules.
