Sonic Mania brings fresh life to classic 2D Sonic with smooth high-speed runs, branching paths, beautiful animation and excellent music. He strongly recommends it, especially to old-school fans, despite wishing for a physical release.

Sonic Mania admirably recreates the style of the Genesis games, but its long levels, time limits and elaborate bosses frustrate. Exploration is confusing, and the nostalgic style hides flaws in the older games' design.

Sonic Mania faithfully recreates classic Sonic physics with slightly tighter controls, a new drop dash, and inventive vertical level design; Falcon calls it as close to flawless as Sonic has been since 1994 and highly recommends it at twenty bucks.
