Our analysis

A genuinely fun, laugh-out-loud open-world hacking romp set in a gorgeous, lively San Francisco that runs and looks great even on lower-spec machines. The real draw is messing about in the sandbox, hacking everything, and the enjoyable co-op rather than the ridiculous, dumbed-down plot and absurd physics. It is far easier and less serious than it pretends to be, but the sheer chaos and fun factor make it worth the price.

Watch Dogs 2 offers more enjoyable hacking gameplay, with its remote-control car and drone making distant approaches satisfying. Its weak story, unlikeable characters and easy missions undermine that fun.

Watch Dogs 2 improves on the original with stronger stealth, drone and RC-car hacking options, and a varied, good-looking San Francisco open world, but its pipe-hacking puzzles grate, the story feels aimless, and it falls short of greatness.
